lunedì, luglio 18th, 2011

PWA Milan invites you to a Networking Aperitivo with Mini-Workshop: Group Networking

All professional women welcome, whether members or guests.

Wednesday, 7 September 7-9 pm

When you leave a networking event, what’s your inner dominant thought? Are you enthusiastic about the interesting people you connected with? Or are you wondering why you bothered to show up – again? Do you wish you’d been able to connect with more of the other attendees?

This month we will again be practicing Group Networking – interacting in small groups to meet several people at the same time. It’s similar to the concept of Speed Networking, except it’s for making business connections with a group of others instead of one at a time. You’ll meet many new contacts in a short time, and it’s a fun, effective, low pressure way to add contacts to your business network.

After a brief introduction – including tips for maximizing the time – you will spend 15 minutes with your group members exchanging information on who you are, what you do, and perhaps most importantly, what you are looking for.

This event is focused on making valuable contacts to expand your professional network – bring plenty of business cards!

Networking 7 – 9 pm/ Presentation 7:45-8 pm
Hotel NH President. Largo Augusto 10, (MM San Babila, Duomo)

Free entrance for members, €10 for guests, payable by cash at the event.
Drinks 9 euro each, light buffet included

Self-Managing Your Career

In today’s world it’s increasingly important that women be responsible for their professional progress. On the one hand, the career options presented to women are exponentially higher than just a few decades ago. On the other, changing employers and even careers regularly is now well-accepted, even commonplace. Too often, however, women’s careers are left to chance events, advice from friends and family, and occasionally, benevolent bosses.

What can you do to become proactive in managing your career? During this special networking aperitivo, PWA Professional Development Director & Mentoring Program Leader Valerie Ryder will offer some concrete ideas and discussion topics to help you take your professional advancement into your own hands.

After her brief presentation, this interactive evening will allow ample time to network, brainstorm, and start planning.

As the new year is now in full swing, we can all take a moment to reflect on the past year and start thinking about what the new year can bring. The start of a year is always a positive moment when we can set new goals, start a new chapter and look for new challenges.

Sometimes the real problem is not finding our own goals, but understanding how we can attain them. All goals need an action plan and an “achieved” date.

During this special networking aperitivo, PWA Networking Director Zoe Flaherty will offer some ideas and discussion topics to help you focus on, work towards and achieve your professional goals for 2011.

After her brief presentation, this interactive evening will allow ample time to compare results and network.

Wed, September 22 Speaker Meeting: Sustainability: Women Leading the Change

venerdì, settembre 17th, 2010

Sustainability is no longer just a trendy concept that will fade away. According to a recent study by Accenture, CEOs believe that we are moving towards an era in which businesses will no longer focus purely on profit and loss as the primary means of valuation, but rather take into account the positive and negative impacts on society and the environment as well.

Today, more and more companies and organisations have declared their CEO’s responsible for CSR or sustainability. They act upon it as a strategic topic which has to be regularly planned, managed and reported. And except from this ‘technical’ approach on how to manage sustainability, the biggest challenge is the ‘human’ factor: how to inject sustainability into a company’s culture and DNA.

So how does it work?
• What does CSR and sustainability mean in general and on a daily basis?
• What can be the benefits for companies when investing in sustainability?
• And how can specifically you and I, as female business managers, mothers and daily consumers, contribute little by little to a more sustainable world?

Tessa will lead us in what promises to be a lively discussion.

About Tessa van Soest
After starting her career in management consulting, Tessa served as Senior officer Corporate Social Responsibility at Schiphol Group (Amsterdam Airport Schiphol).
There she managed the organizational change of integrating CSR into the company’s strategy and DNA. She created a professional CSR department and implemented initiatives to execute the strategic sustainability agenda within the airport of Schiphol. In 2009 Tessa moved with her husband and son to Milan and is currently director and market maker of Twinstone Italy. In this role she focuses on activating both social and business communities in Milan to become aware about their own potential contributions to sustainability.

We all set goals in order to be more focused on achieving what’s important to us, whether personal or professional.

Sometimes we are highly-motivated and attain them seemingly without effort.

At other times, we set goals that we never even get close to and that only frustrate us and make us feel guilty for not following through.

Why do our outcomes vary so widely? What can we do to help ourselves help ourselves?

Join us as Coach, Retreat Leader and PWA Member Laura Salvaneschi demonstrates a simple yet highly-effective technique for creating focused and achievable goals that will propel you to success.

After her brief presentation, this interactive evening will allow ample time to compare results and network.

Wed, 21 April Speaker Meeting: Meritocracy in Italy – Why We Need It, Action Steps to Achieve It

sabato, aprile 3rd, 2010

Roger Abravanel is not a proponent of quote rosa to promote equal opportunities for women. Rather, he describes himself as “a friend of meritocracy”: excellence should drive leadership and not family name, gender or where one is born

Join us to hear from this celebrated author, blogger and advocate who will discuss themes from his latest book and update us on the status of his affirmative action project aimed at increasing the number of women serving on boards of Italian companies.

Going beyond the traditional condemnations of its absence, he will discuss why meritocracy is key for economic development, how successful societies promote it and why in Italy it is not properly valued. He will elaborate on the four action steps he proposes to promote a culture of meritocracy – including an affirmative action plan.

Reviewers of his book have defined Roger as a visionary. He wrote “Meritocracy” and launched his affirmative action project well in advance of the many current proposals on the subject.

About Roger
Roger Abravanel was Director of McKinsey & Company where his career spanned 35 years. He is currently an advisor in the private equity sector and sits on the boards of several Italian companies including Luxottica Group. He serves as president of the INSEAD Italian Council. His blog at Corriere della Sera takes its name from his book, Meritocrazia: Quattro proposte concrete per valorizzare il talento e rendere il nostro paese più ricco e più giusto (Meritocracy: Four concrete proposals to increase the value of talent and make our country richer and more equitable). Born in Libya, he emigrated to Italy as a young adult and earned a degree in chemical engineering at Milano Politechnico and an MBA at INSEAD. Read his blog here
