Speaker Meeting

All professional women welcome whether members or guests

Wednesday, 5 July 2006
Amy Carroll, communications coach, presents
"The Art and Science of Positive Influence"

Discover the hidden game of power and status and learn how to positively influence others

How we say what we say is currency that is used to negotiate the power in each relationship, whether we are talking with colleagues, superiors or customers. The vast majority of lost productivity in business is a result of us getting consumed in this power struggle believing that we are actually communicating about the issues.

There is an unspoken conversation going on in most every interaction. And it's about power and status. In subtle ways we telegraph who's got control and who doesn't. Some people take on the predator role and give non-verbal cues to ensure that no one takes advantage of them, unfortunately leaving others wounded. Others do the opposite. They get intimidated and give signals that they're the prey; as a result, they often feel mistreated.

There is a third role, however, that is a much more positive and powerful choice. That's the role of partner, which equalizes the personal power within business and personal relationships, leaving both parties feeling valued and respected.

In Amy's special 2-hour interactive presentation you will:

  • Identify which one of the three main power strategies you use predominantly in conversation
  • Learn the two most powerful questions that need to be answered for another person to respect and trust you
  • Eliminate the common self-defeating behaviors that may cause you to hurt others or, conversely, get walked on
  • Discover the seven behaviors that make people want to work with you, regardless of positional power
  • Learn the three keys to handling yourself in a high-pressure situation

Collaborating with Skills To Success Inc., an international consulting firm (<www.skillstosuccess.com>), Amy Carroll coaches clients to become more dynamic, confident speakers as well as to develop their ability to influence others by creating powerful partnerships in their business and personal relationships. Originally from New York, Amy worked seven years in the mental health field before moving to Switzerland in 1995. Amy is an inspirational and energetic presenter and coach, providing practical tools for positive change.

Amy will be joining PWA members and guests at a nearby pizzeria for further conversation after the meeting. No reservations are necessary for this portion of the evening.

Speaker Meeting

All professional women welcome whether members or guests

Wednesday, 20 September 2006
M. Cristina Bombelli, professor, founder and coordinator of Laboratorio Armonia, author and consultant, presents
"Negoziazione al Femminile"

The presentation will be given in Italian

Why do women find it so difficult to negotiate? Numerous studies have demonstrated that women do not know how to ask, and this means that they are less likely to receive. First and foremost, as women, we need to ask ourselves: what stops us from expressing what we need, clearly and assertively?

Cristina's presentation will explore not only this predominantly female trait but also why women do not "defend" their territory and follow up their demands. Ironically, while women are often skilled in negotiating on others' behalf, they are much less effective when they doing so for themselves.

During the presentation, Cristina will focus on how we can improve our approach to negotiations. She will help us plan negotiations better, including how to develop content and strategies, while also managing relationships. While change will not be immediate, the objective of the meeting is to provide tips and pointers for self-reflection and improvement. Being able to identify where you are going wrong is the first step towards changing your negotiation pattern.

The presentation will be given in Italian

Cristina is a professor at SDA Bocconi and Bicocca University in the field of human resource management. She founded and continues to coordinate the work of Laboratorio Armonia, a research center on diversity management issues. Recent projects directed include: "The Italian glass ceiling", "The pay gap between women and men", "Over 45 and Italian ageism", and "Cross cultural HRM between China and Italy". She is also a consultant in diversity management and an executive coach. The author of numerous articles and books, Cristina's most recent publication, La passione e la fatica, focuses on the obstacles facing career women in Italy.

Join us for an informal dinner at a nearby pizzeria for further conversation after the meeting. No reservations are necessary for this portion of the evening.
