What You Missed at the PWA September Speaker Event: Great Expectations

sabato, ottobre 29th, 2011

by Caroline Flanagan

Which are you, a Ditherer or a Plunger?

Were you fortunate enough to spend time by the swimming pool or near the sea this summer? Well if you’re like me, and enjoy observing people, you will have noticed that the world is divided into two types of swimmer: the Ditherer and the Plunger!

The Ditherer takes half an hour to get from their sun lounger to the edge of the pool or sea. They fiddle around with their things, reapply sun lotion, reposition their swim costume, all the time thinking about getting in the water but not actually doing it. When they do eventually get to the water’s edge, they put first one toe in, then another, just to test the water. A knee follows, then eventually the waist. A good 45 minutes can go by between the decision to go swimming and them actually taking the plunge!

And then there are the Plungers. They decide they are going swimming, and before you can say “swimming costume” they have taken the plunge, disappearing beneath the waves only to re-emerge refreshed and exhilarated 100 metres out to sea.

We deprive ourselves of the opportunity to achieve
This business of the Ditherer and the Plunger is an excellent metaphor for how many of us behave in our lives when it comes to achieving our goals. Although we know what we need to do to achieve our goals, we approach such tasks with hesitancy and uncertainty, a bit like the Ditherer on the beach who hovers at the water’s edge. We talk about our goal, we think and dream about it. We even take small steps towards achieving it. But we never really commit ourselves fully and so deprive ourselves of the opportunity to fully achieve our goals.

Commit your whole body and mind
Hovering at the water’s edge with your feet in the water is all very well. Yes its cooling, it even gets you wet. But it is not swimming. To be swimming (in other words, to achieve your goal) you need to commit your whole body and mind. You need to take the plunge. Jump in! Dive in! Launch yourself dramatically off the nearest diving board. However you choose to do it, do it with conviction. The sea may at times be cooler or rougher than you expected but any initial discomfort will quickly fade beneath the thrill of dancing with the waves and gliding through the water’s surface towards your goal.

Dreams, Hopes and Wishes will only get you so far
When you talk about your goals what language do you use? Do you tell people that you Dream of running your business, that you Wish you could give up your job and travel around the world, or do you talk about all the things you Hope to do one day when the circumstances are right. The language we use is an indicator of who we are when it comes to achieving our goals. Which are you? A Dreamer, a Hoper, or a Wisher?

Dreams Hopes and Wishes are of course an important part of the goal process. Without them we would not be able to imagine a better life for ourselves, nor be able to see that life as possible. But to dream, to hope and to wish is not enough. Because when we go through life as Dreamers, Hopers and Wishers, two things happen:

1. we wait for circumstances beyond our control to improve or turn in our favour, such as a better economic climate, a change of employer; and
2. we take small steps towards our goals, fooling ourselves that we are making real progress, when all we are doing is dangling our feet in the waters, each resulting in a failure to fully realise our goals.

Make the commitment, and strange things will happen

If you really want to achieve your goals you need to have Great Expectations of yourself. This means making a full commitment to what you wish to achieve. Then and only then will your goal become a reality. When you do this, strange things will happen:

• instead of being a passenger in your own life, you’ll become the driver and can choose the direction you want to go in;
• instead of wallowing in comfort, you’ll find the courage to step outside of your comfort zone, into the zone of discomfort where real change and learning takes place;
• instead of feeling like a powerless victim of circumstances, you’ll start to feel powerful;
• instead of being crippled by self doubt, as a result of taking decisive action you’ll start to believe in yourself;
• instead of waiting for change, you’ll discover more and more ways to initiate it;
• instead of standing still, your life will gather momentum and you’ll start to move forward,

Do what you’ve been avoiding
To truly commit yourself means to do the one thing you’ve been avoiding doing because the circumstances aren’t right or because you feel you’re not ready. Usually it is the thing that fills you with the most fear. Asking for a promotion or pay rise; walking out on a dead-end relationship; or approaching a big corporation for work for example. Whatever it is, you are not truly committed to your goal until you’ve done it. Until then, you’ll just be sitting by the side of the swimming pool with your feet in the water, watching other swimmers reach their goals and wondering why you aren’t one of them.

Begin it now!
If you want to succeed, it is no good dreaming, wishing or hoping. The only way to get results is to commit yourself bodily and mentally to your goal by taking the one significant step that you’ve been avoiding or putting off. This is your Great Expectation, it is what you must expect of yourself, and it is the key to your success. In the famous words of Goethe:

“ Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it now!
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now!”

Wednesday, Sept 21, PWA Speaker Meeting: Great Expectations

venerdì, settembre 9th, 2011

Speaker Meeting

All professional women welcome whether members or guests

Wednesday, 21 September 2011, 7-9.30 p.m.
Executive Coach and PWA Member Caroline Flanagan presents:
“Great Expectations”

The holidays are over and summer is drawing to a close. Evenings are shorter and suntans are starting to fade. Are you feeling energized, motivated and focused on your goals? Or are you wallowing in post-holiday blues and in denial about the challenges that lie ahead? Perhaps you are experiencing a mixture of both. Whichever is the case, Caroline’s “Great Expectations” presentation will give you the kickstart and the forward momentum that you need.

Join PWA for a motivating and energising evening that gets to the heart of the matter: your attitude. Let’s be honest – most of you know what you want, but do you believe you will actually succeed in realising these aims? What’s your relationship to your goals? Are you a Dreamer, a Wisher or a Hoper?

Caroline will introduce us to these 3 passive states that many of us are stuck in without knowing it. While each of these stages has a part to play in helping us to achieve success, on their own they are not enough. We need to move through these levels and on to the active and powerful state of being an Expecter – the state of having Great Expectations of ourselves and of the changes we want to see in our lives.

Come and discover why expecting more of yourself, and less of your surroundings is fundamental to success. Learn how to apply this active and powerful state to your personal and professional lives in order to achieve the results you are looking for.

Wed, October 21 Speaker Meeting: Choosing Your Own Leadership Style

martedì, ottobre 6th, 2009

Ruth Ann Lake, Independent Consultant, Management Trainer and PWA Member presents “Professional Women – Choosing Your Own Leadership Style”

In an era where personal branding enables us to prosper and survive or wither on the vine, what styles of leadership are we witnessing in the marketplace?

Since the majority of the business leaders in the Italian and European business community are men, must we, as professional women “copy” a predominantly male leadership style in order to be promoted or gain success?

Topics will include:
• Overview of a choice on leadership style
• Examples of women leaders, comments
• Building Influence and Impact; choosing your approach
• Leading from an assumption of scarcity or an assumption of abundance
• Choosing your own Internal Dialogue

I do not pound my fist on the table and impose my opinion.  I normally listen, consult and then decide.  Some people need to become used to a different style of female leadership…..
Angela Merkel (newly re-elected Chancellor of Germany)

Please join us to hear this dynamic speaker provide key insights and interact with the group on how we can determine the best approach for our own professional life.

Monday, April 27 Seminar: “Great Expectations”

martedì, marzo 31st, 2009

SPECIAL EVENT: SKILL BUILDING WORKSHOP

Monday, 27 April 2009, 7- 9.30 p.m.
Coaching Professional and PWA Member Caroline Flanagan presents

“Great Expectations “

What value do you place on yourself, your skills and your experience? How highly do you rate your personal appeal, your natural abilities? That promotion, pay rise, dream job or thriving business – you want it, but do you feel entitled to it?

One of the key barriers to women achieving greater success in their professional lives is a low sense of entitlement. Studies have shown that, unlike men, we women greatly undervalue and undersell our skills, our appeal and ourselves. This translates into us having low expectations of how we are rewarded in our work and of how others should treat us.

So why does this matter? It matters because people with great expectations and a high sense of entitlement are better at asking for what they want and getting it. On the other hand people with low expectations and a low sense of entitlement (typically women) are often overlooked and fall far short of realising their true potential.

In this workshop you will honestly evaluate yourself, your attributes, your powers, your strengths – everything you have to offer. With the help of others in the group, you’ll make an objective assessment of your true market power, including all those qualities you have that you take for granted. Once you have a balance sheet of your assets and skills, you’ll use this as a basis for creating greater expectations, raising your sense of entitlement and developing the courage to ask (and get) what you want.

Coaching Professional and PWA Member Cristina Gianotti, presents
“Coaching: an important tool for progress in all aspects of life”

——————————————————————————–

To make progress in your career, you need to be conscious of what you really want and make plans on how to achieve your goals. For example, to improve your professional life you might want to:

  • become more assertive in the work place
  • deal more effectively with difficult colleagues (whether it be client, assistant, or boss)
  • learn how to manage your team in order to make its members grow both as professionals and as a group
  • launch a new project that brings you to a higher level of your career
  • start a new business

Coaching helps you to become aware of your goals and take concrete and measurable steps to pursue them. The coach will be your “sparring partner” assisting you in the new journey, aiding you in keeping your motivation and determination on track.

March 2008 – Coaching workshop series

domenica, gennaio 25th, 2009

PWA announced the launch of our series of coaching workshops at our February speaker event and the response so far has been overwhelming.The concept grew out of Cristina Gianotti’s speaker meeting topic, “Coaching: an important tool for progress in all aspects of life”. Since PWA has a number of members who are professional coaches, we decided to offer additional sessions on more specific topics to groups limited to 12 women at a nominal fee. Participants could “test-drive” coaching and see for themselves how it works.

The first session, presented by Cristina Gianotti – who was also the speaker at the February meeting – is entitled “How to find a new employment opportunity” and was held on March 12; it was sold out within 2 days of opening of registration. The second workshop on April 9, “How to overcome your fear and realise your potential” with Caroline Flanagan, also sold out immediately.

Upcoming sessions currently slated for May 14, June 11 and September 24 will be held by Anna Piatti, Valerie Ryder and Pilar Chaparro, respectively. Confirmed topics include “Networking, mastering your introduction and more” and “Emotional intelligence applied in our daily lives”

Based on your positive response, we’d like to add more of these types of extra events. In the next few days you will receive a short survey via email so that we can collect your opinions and ideas. Please take the 2 minutes required to respond.

Although we have a wealth of talent and resources among our membership to lead these sessions, our greatest need is for meeting space. If you, your company or someone you know has centrally-located space available during the evening that could be used by PWA for this type of event, please let us know.

February 2008 – Passion and energy

domenica, gennaio 25th, 2009

A month and a half has passed since our adventure as a board started and many things have happened in the meanwhile.
I would like to take the opportunity to say some thanks, and ask for your support for our many future projects and activities.I would like to thank all board members and their assistants for the passion and energy they show every single day; this is what you need to overcome difficulties and obstacles.
I would like to thank in particular Viviana for her determination and passion which made our first press appearance in Il Mondo possible and I am sure this is only the beginning.
I would also like to thank Rebecca for having put in place a members-only mailing list available that makes direct communication to members possible. If you feel like you need support on how to use it and would like to learn more, please write an e-mail Rebecca to at webmistress@pwa-milan.org or ask any of the board members during our next events.

On a personal basis, I would like to thank Nancy Fina for having activated her contacts to help me find a professional photographer for a corporate picture I needed within 2 days. The following day I was at Sabrina Tanzi’s studio for an incredibly funny and very professional shooting, the result of which is in front of you on the magazine. This is just an example of the power of a network: you can easily find high profile professionals in almost any field that are willing to support and help you find the answer to your needs.

Moving to an exciting project and the topic of the next event -coaching. This truly represents an example of what we would like PWA Milan to be When Vered called Antonia to let her know that she was unable to come in February as planned, Cristina Gianotti was already starting to plan an event on coaching. To us it was natural to ask her to take on the February event.
The wonderful thing that followed was the enthusiasms of all our PWA coaches towards the idea of a PWA Coaching Project, a project that will see our coaches provide workshops on specific topics of interest throughout the year. If you have ideas about future initiatives that you would like to work on and if your company is willing to provide meeting rooms for our workshops, please write to president@pwa-milan.org or to speakers@pwa-milan.org.

The PWA Coaching Project represents one of the many projects that are starting within PWA: we are now defining the EuropeanPWN President’s Meeting Project, we are starting to dialogue with SDA Bocconi and Laboratorio Armonia to develop a partnership within the EuropeanPWN MBA Initiative, we have foreign women networks constantly getting in touch with us to start special initiatives, just to mention the most important ones.
Any support from members is more than welcome and we believe it would be a great opportunity to get involved in organizing events and projects.

The most positive feelings I get through these first months as President of PWA Milan, are energy and passion. I see women willing to contribute and to bring their personal experience and professional competencies for the benefit of us all, a flow of ideas and enthusiasm that encourages us to do more.

Monica Pesce
President, PWA
